We have been using RouteGadget for uploading/drawing routes after each event, but some other clubs use Livelox. We are trying to figure out which one DVOA members would like better -- would you help us test this out this weekend?

For the Willows event, I will be setting up both RouteGadget and Livelox, and I'll be looking for feedback from everyone (you can post in this thread, or send me an email)

Even if you've never used RouteGadget, or tried it and found it to be confusing -- could you give Livelox a shot, and let me know if you have found it to be any easier to use than RG?

To use Livelox, you will first need to create a free account here:

If you have Strava, Livelox offers an integration where you can link your Strava account to Livelox, and all your orienteering routes from that point on will automatically get uploaded into Livelox.

Here are instructions for setting up the Strava integration: https://www.livelox.com/Documentation/Athletes/Strava

I will set up the Livelox event to go live a few minutes after 1pm on Saturday (after the starts are closed), so if you set up a Strava integration, you will be able to see your route on Livelox right avay when your watch uploads it to Strava.

I will add a link to the event a later today.

    Thank you!

    -Lena

You can also automatically link your track to Livelox through Garmin Connect. https://www.livelox.com/Documentation/Athletes/Garmin

Have viewed routes on Livelox. I find there's a bit of a learning curve as to how to use it.
All I have seen so far are routes for those with GPS.
Can routes be entered manually ?
Don't have a GPS and do not foresee getting one. I trust my own memory to be more accurate for the route placement on the map.
That said, it looks like the GPS routes on Livelox are pretty accurate verses individuals using Route Gadget.

I have found the opposite of Ron... there's no way to adjust your route in Livelox, and I hate that. (GPS is not perfect and I think some people don't bother to fix their routes in Routegadget, which is what Ron is seeing. I can't stand if mine isn't right... it's especially bad on sprints where there is interference with the GPS signal and it shows you running through buildings and such.) I also find Livelox much less intuitive (although I also think the newer form of Routegadget is also a step backward in that regard.) I just had to use it for the first time in a while since West Point didn't have a Routegadget option :( and it took me forever to find where things were (and I'm pretty sure a bunch of settings moved since the last time I used it.) In short, Livelox makes me sad. But Lena already knew that.

Ron -- yes, you can draw your route manually in Livelox! I'll post some instructions tomorrow.

Julie -- yep, I do know how you feel about this issue, but still thank you for posting it here, it helps to get the discussion started. I hope more people voice their opinions. I personally don't have a preference, I just know that some people have strong opinions, and I hope we can settle on the tool that works best for most people.

Just from reading the above thread I agree completely with Julie. I have not used Livelox yet but will enter my routes from Skunk Hollow to compare.
I had not used the new route gadget until Ft. Washington and found it confusing and not as simple as the old version. I, like Julie, adjust my route at places I know where it should be when the track is not quite right. I like the GPS for when I had no idea how I got somewhere and it gives me a pretty good idea where I went.
I'll weigh in again after I put today's routes in both programs.

Yikes - I use STRAVA. Signed up and it ran my course in the proper time frame between controls; but, ran straight line from control to control and not my actual course.  I obviously missed some detail when signing in.

I spent about an hour this morning in each RouteGadget and Livelox. Below is what I learned with my opinions.

Route Gadget: I was never able to find a like that went to the original RG. Every like took me to RG2.

     - There is some nice flexibility in RG2 as you can change intensities of the map and routes under settings as well as line widths of route and course lines.

     - Under the courses tab, there is a slider bar for the selected course that can truncate the course legs down to one leg but to move leg to leg requires moving both toggles.

     - It seems that you can only view all tracks for a course. I don’t see any way to pick just one or select 2-3 to compare.

     - Editing a GPS track is not as easy as RG1 but I was getting the hang of it. I wish RG2 would lock your track to the controls like RG1 did. Then, any edits were within a leg. RG2 doesn't seem to have that Based on time, the track knows when you were at a specific control and should lock that.

     - RG1 had the ability to hover over a track leg and see the time and difference between other compared tracks. RG2 does not seem to have this. I really liked that feature.

Livelox: right off the bat, I'm not a fan of having to pay for unrestricted access and the adds are annoying.

     - The biggest dislike is the inability to adjust your GPS route to match the map. I hate looking at my route that is running in green 20m parallel to a trail.

     - Unless you pay, you cant compare multiple routes.

     - The top bar above the event map is nice. It allows you to view the entire route on the course or individual legs with just one click... and it reorients the map zooming to only that leg... but again, only one track at a time. On the down side, some of the legs I viewed were not clipped control to control. I have no Idea how Livelox determined what my leg length was but it was not correct.

Ultimately, having to pay for features and removing ads is a big turnoff. Then, not being able to edit the GPS route makes Livelox the loser for me.

I would love to see Route Gadget with the best of its old and new version but as it stands, RG2 would still be my pick.

Under the OUSA agreement with Livelox, I think we are supposed to have unrestricted access.  For the Willows event this does not appear to be the case - is there something which needs to be changed in the set-up?

Apparently in order to have the OUSA subscription apply to us, I need to create a DVOA club account first, and not just post events from my own account. Sorry about that, I was under the impression that all events in the US would be covered by the subscription. I'll add the club later today, and I'll see if I can move the event under the club account ownership.

As for the original RouteGadget (as opposed to RouteGadget 2) -- it's currently down because of issues with our hosting service. Wyatt has put a lot of work into trying to fix the issues, but so far unsuccessfully.

Update -- adding a club didn't help in getting the OUSA Livelox subscription features. I'll figure this out sometime next week.
