Join us on Sunday June 13th from 10-1PM for some fast summertime courses on a brand new map!

    Logistics
    • Preregister online by Friday evening (June 11th) at Event Register
    • Location/Parking
      • We will be in a picnic area in the north part of the park near tollgate road - look for the DVOA tent.
      • The nearest parking is in the "dog park" lot:  40.206817, -74.920262
      • If that lot is full there is also:
        • Official grass overflow parking area:  40.206231, -74.921038
        • A paved lot a bit south of registration: 40.205875, -74.920051
    • Bathrooms are located just a few steps from registration/start/finish.
    • Masks on in the registration area and the bathrooms - thanks!
    Course Notes:
    • Out of Bounds Areas (marked on the map)
      • All parking lots are OB for safety reasons.  All courses except white have road crossings so please be very careful!
      • Core Creek has some cat colonies and their homes are OB.
      • For areas shown as planted fields, you can run around the perimeter of the field but no cutting through the field.
    • Most of the courses will be in mown areas or on trails, but there will also be some areas of higher grass and for green and red some wooded areas.  There will be little time spent on paved surfaces.  For attire, I would probably recommend lightweight long pants for tick protection.
    • Most of the map was completed this spring by Bob Burg, with some of the areas used by Green and Red done by Valdimir Zherdev in winter 2019, with recent updates by Bob Burg.  So the map is very up to date.
    • Map scale will be 1:5000 for all courses except green and red, which are 1:7500.  Contour interval is 5m on all maps.
    • I made a few small adjustments for use in summer vegetation (added some green slash to areas that get thick in the summer and removed indistinct trails that are not usable in summer).  Any segments of white woods or indistinct trails that are left on the map are viable route choices and should be passible.  In general I would not recommend trying to cut through areas that are any shade of green (and the courses are not designed to make that an optimal route choice).

Well, some of the cats may be named Bob.

For anybody who is interested, here is some info about the feral cat management program at Core Creek.

Also, here is an associated facebook page with lots of pictures.

My hope is that the cat colonies are away from the dog parks, otherwise we would have the end of times foretold in Ghostbusters.

This may actually be the time I finally stick my toe back into the orienteering pond (super covid paranoia on my end), and a family member is interested in participating.

Thanks to all for all you do,

    Rich

I blundered into the cat colony a couple of years ago when I was trying the old permanent course.  It was awful.  I read the web page and it seems they tried to control the situation.  I'll be interested to see what it's like now.  It's hard to believe the beautiful cats on the FB page are not adoptable.

Are shorts a reasonable option for the red course?  It's not that hot, but the notes about how Park like it is make it tempting.

The courses (including Red) will be in open areas, on trails, and in the (few) patches of nice woods.  So you could run any course in shorts and not get your legs torn up (unless you decide to take a route choice right through some green, which is not how the courses were designed!). There is enough high grass in the open areas and other vegetation in the woods that I would be very careful with tics, especially if you choose to go with shorts.

If you are debating wearing spiked shoes or not, white through brown will have a lot of time on grassy surfaces with only maybe 1 very short steepish off-trail spot.  Green and Red will have a couple more off-trail inclines and also some trails that were a bit muddier and slick today.  There will be little paved time on any course.
