    Canoe-O Saturday July 25th

Contactless and free  (for the map at least)

I will be on site at Port Providence Paddle near the canoe rental area handing out laminated double-sided 1:7500 maps of the canal and river.

I will be there from 10 AM to Noon, then I'm hitting the canal/river myself.

There will be ~15 or more orienteering flags, mostly on the river, a few on land.   On the flags will be a code only - no punch.  When you can read the code, you can consider it "punched".   Controls on the canal will be something gimicky to make it more interesting for that part.   The river part has plenty of route choice.

The river level is normal this summer.   Wear sneakers in case you have to walk in shallow water - sometimes you'll need to cut across the river horizontally and you will run into sand bars and such.

Rental rates:   Kayak: $44, Double kayak: $55,   Canoe: $50.   Call 610-933-1421 for reservations - do it early!

You can also bring your own boat(s).

    Course is finalized.

There will be three pointless controls in the canal, all hung on turtles.  The canal is normally clogged with turtles - you should see 100+ on a typical summer day.  They are very used to the canoe traffic.

The rest of the controls are normal orienteering flags with numbers but no punch.  You just have to get close enough to read the code underneath the number.

There will be two land controls during the first portage at Lock 60.  Good chance to stretch the legs...one has a decent climb.

There will be twelve contols in the river.  Two controls at the end are beyond the portage ... so if you visit them you'll need to paddle upstream for a while to get back to the portage spot.

I'll post again next week with the weather / river outlook.   Both are great at the moment.
