Mark your calanders for a day in the woods exploring many of the awesome parts of Hickory Run that we don't get to use during the annual training weekend. We will be using all four of our Hickory Run orienteering maps (Gould Run, Shades of Death, Sand Spring Lake, and the original 1:15 scale map of the northern half of the park).  Half-day and full-day options will be available.  Food will be provided after the event, with a chance to hang out with orienteering friends, new and old, to share your adventures.

Plan on joining us for a day of navigational fun in some of our best terrain.
Look for more information soon, once the details of all of the permssions are finalized.

Since the event starts on Sunday, I am assuming it is not a full rogaine (24 hours). How long will it be, and will flags be picked up that day? ( I could come up Monday if you like)

Correct, not 24-hour rogaine.  The longest division will likely be 10 hours (8AM-6PM) if we can get gamelands permissions, maybe a bit shorter if we cannot.

Control pickup will mostly be on Monday, so yes, any helpers for pickup would be greatly appreciated!

So, pending the decision about the third Sunday for hunting in 2020, if there is no hunting allowed on May 31st the format for the event will be:

    Sunday May 31, 2020.

The timing options for the different duration courses are:

    • 10 hour:  Map handout 7AM, event 8AM-6PM.
    • 7 hour:  Map handout 10AM, event 11AM-6PM.
    • 4 hour:  There are two different options:
      • Map handout 10AM, event 11AM-3PM.
      • Map handout 1PM, event 2PM-6PM.

Expect more details after the hunting decision.  We can't finalize permissions until after that point.  And if there is hunting on the 31st (the end of spring Turkey season) a change in date for the event will likely be needed.

For those of us not really connected to PA politics...

What's the 3rd Sunday hunting decision?

Allow hunting on the 3rd Sunday of each month -- or only prohibit hunting on the 3rd Sunday of each month?

May is usually the time for sping Gobbler season in PA.  One of the seasons runs up until the 30th:

Guy: Pa is deciding whether to allow hunting on three Sundays per year. Currently there is no hunting on Sunday. The three days woul be the first week of archery/black powder deer season, the second would be the first week of rifle deer season and the third would be spring turkey.

The legislature did pass a law last fall to allow three Sundays of hunting during 2020.
The law specifies that there will be Sunday hunting on one day during rifle deer season, one day during statewide archery deer season and a third day the Pennsylvania Game Commission will pick.  It is this third date that has a good likelihood of being during spring Turkey season (May 2-30).
Since the law was only passed in November, the exact dates for the three Sundays of hunting have not yet been announced by the game commission.
