This Sunday at Tyler is the annual HVO/DVOA dual meet. Come out, support your club, and enjoy a day in the woods.

For team scoring, we will use the following rules:

    • There will be no formal restrictions on who can run what course and still count for scoring. However, in the interest of good sportsmanship we ask that you not run down to an easier course than you usually do just for strategic scoring purposes. If I see you signing up for a course you shouldn’t be running I will give you a stern disapproving look and not let you eat any snacks.

    • Below is a table with the points awarded to the orienteer who finishes in each place on each course for each gender. The points are based on the number of age classes usually assigned to each course. The point totals are set up so that most (likely all) runners on a course will score points for their team. So just by showing up and doing a course you can help your club, and if you have a good run and beat somebody with a similar speed to you your club will be rewarded. So everybody can be involved in the scoring and excitement!

    • To account for the fact that DVOA is a larger club and is hosting the event (so should have higher participation rates), scores earned by HVO members will all be multiplied by 2 for the final scoring.

    • When you register, be sure that the correct club name is part of your registration entry in order for your score to be counted in the team event.

    • Don’t like something about the system? I only accept complaints in person so see you Sunday at Tyler :)

    Points for each course:

(Note that W/Y/O Male & Female are each scored separately but all use the same points scale):

Sam, did you come up with that scoring system?  It's quite different from what we've used in past years.

...Just an observation, not a criticism!   Cool

Will be interesting to see how it plays out -- especially with that 2x points for HVO...

Yes, this is a new system that I came up with after consultation with some other club members.
And yes, it is very different than the previous system.

Last year's system only counted the top three finishers for each club on each course.  This was designed to account for participation and size differences between the clubs, but also meant that if you weren't one of the fasted people on your course you were not really participating in the team part of the event.  This year's system is designed to be more inclusive - everybody's results matter (so come on out and help your team!).  Also, unlike the mid-Atlantics scoring system, even if you are not one of the fast runners on a course if you have a good day you can help your team even more (not just earning fixed participations points).  However, going to a system like this puts the smaller, "away" club at a disadvantage compared to the old system, hence the 2 times multiplier.

I'm also interested to see how it will work.  The point lists and the multiplier are certainly not perfect, but hopefully they will generate some excitement and encourage widespread participation.

Also, if everything goes correctly with the computer, in addition to individual results we should have a display with live updating team scoring at the event.  Fingers crossed.

This is absolutely great, Sam.  You offered to run the e-system for the Dual Meet and maybe come up with a scoring system.  But this out does what I imagined.  The exact scoring is in tiny print, so I haven't read the details., but your description sounds great. An as an experimental system this is a great....well....a great experiment.

Hopefully DVOA doesn't lose by one point to HVO's doubled points, eh?  Surprised

And everyone, if you come help us out on Saturday with the hundreds of cadets, you can run a course that will count for Sunday's Dual Meet.  But you've got to make a blood promise to not share your course with anyone....we will be watching. Tongue out

If you'd like to check out the Course Stats for this weekend's events, go read my next post describing the events.
We will definitely welcome any assistance.
