Colonel Denning is our last event will a full set of courses until July, so come out an enjoy a day in the woods!

Full set of White through Blue courses plus a Sprint (on a weekend for those who asked!), all on one of our least-green maps, perfect for June. Come out, run a course, relax a bit while you grab some food and water, and then try out the Sprint course.

    Start Times:

Standard White through Blue courses:  Start any time from 10AM-1PM. Courses close at 3PM.

Sprint Course:  Start any time from 10AM to 3PM.  Course closes at 4PM.

    Cost:

First course is usual SVO rate - $5 for SVO, QOC, and DVOA members, $10 for non-members.

Additional courses (including the sprint) are $3 each.

    Location:

There is some construction going on in the park, so the parking location will depend a bit on what lot is open.  Just follow the o-signs from the main park entrance to parking. Registration and finish will be in a tent either next to the parking lot or along the road to the parking area.  Start, finish, and restrooms will all be within 100-200 meters of registration.

Map Scale:  White, Yellow, and Sprint are 1:5,000 Scale.  All other courses are 1:10,000.

Contour Interval: 5m on all maps.

Finish:  The go control and finish are very close to each other so their circles overlap.  The route from the go control to the finish is flagged.

Out of Bounds:  Private Property and the park campground are marked as OB on the map - please respect this OB so that we can continue to use the park!  There are also dashed lines indicating park boundaries on the map, but unless marked as OB on the map, we have permission to use the land on the other side of the boundary.

Road Crossing:  The advanced courses will all cross a public road twice - the road is not too busy but please be careful.  All courses will cross some lightly used roads within the park.

    Map Notes:

The Green, Red, and Blue courses will pass through the property of the Doubling Gap Center.  There has been some tree cutting in this area in the last couple of years with a lot of deadfall on the ground.  I updated the trail network, added some green slash to roughly show the areas of worst deadfall, and added some new small clearings, but the map is not as accurate overall in this area as in the rest of the terrain.  There are no controls on the property, just route choice legs through the area, so hopefully these maps updates will be enough to help you successfully and fairly navigate this section of the course.

The original map is eight years old (with smaller updates in the meantime), so many of the original root-stalks are decaying and small, with a few new unmapped rootstalks appearing (some of which have been added to the map).

    Terrain Notes:

The map consists of a large valley.  Along the base of the valley are a stream, a couple of lakes, and a few marshy areas.  The sides of the valley are cut by numerous distinct re-entrants. The most common point features are large rootstocks, dot knolls (most of which are old rootstalks), and some boulders.  The map is mostly white woods, with a few areas of barberry (mapped as green slash). Some deadfall and a few stoney ground areas are the most common things to slow you down. Overall, this map is one of the best that we have for early summer orienteering - large parts of the woods remain early-season beautiful well past spring.

There are a number of roads and trails in the valley bottom; the valley sides are a nice mix of some areas with a dense trail network and other areas will no trails at all.

Just one update.  The main parking lot at Colonel Denning is open, so parking and registration and finish will all be right next to each other, with restrooms and start 200m away.  They have even installed a couple of electric car charging stations!
