-
Topic created by skolins on Tue Apr 23, 2019 at 11:11 pmAt Fair Hill on May 12, in addition to the usual courses we will also have a free intermediate course on contours. When: Class is offered at two times, starting at 10:00 and 11:15. Lasts around 1 hour.Where: Meet at the registration area for the event (see the link on the schedule page) . The class will be out in the woods, off-trail.What: The class will introduce the idea of what contours are and some common types of contour features. We will do a group walk where we identify contour features on our map with the corresponding land-forms in the terrain. Then we'll talk about techniques for using contours to help with navigation and we'll practice these strategies on some short off-trail routes. Most of the class will involve reading a map that has everything except the contours removed so that we can really focus on getting better at contour reading.Who: The class is aimed at people who have completed an orienteering course before and are looking to transition to (or improve their performance on) courses that involve more off-trail navigation. After the class you can try out your new skills on one of the full courses being offered that day ($5 for SVO, QOC, or DVOA members, $10 for non-members)How: Register by sending an e-mail to samcol19 at yahoo dot com so that we can make sure to print the right number of training maps. Why: Because orienteering is awesome!!
