Yes the weather channel was nearly perfect.  Said the rain would be over at 10 and it cleared about 15 minutes ahead of schedule.

....and those who did come out today were rewarded with a great day of orienteering.  Weather turned warmer and rainless just when Starts began.  And other than a few sprinkles late morning, the day got warmer still, winds calmed before they picked up mid afternoon, but rain was gone for good.

Everyone enthusiastically welcomed the wide-open terrain that will never be as open again.,,,unless we have some ambitious misguided pyromaniac in our midst. Wink  Both skeptics and believers of my promos were won over, loving the Batsto woods like never before, their courses, and the recovering weather.

Kudos all around for our crew -- Pat and Bob bringing the kit with them from their storage garage, then running Reg and Start till they got early enough relief to run their courses. Thank you two so very much.  John G who volunteered out of the blue to run the e-system, Vadim (with Olga and little man Mark) who showed up ready to do whatever would help the event (well maybe not Mark -- he was too busy being a kid), Kathy and Dave who served a number of roles including Kathy on computer second shift while John ran a course (to his utter delight). Tom O enjoyed a relatively quiet lunch while relieving Bob at Start, Mark showed up early helping in all sorts of ways especially for making Finish and general event appearance look great, and a big thank you to Julie K who loaded her car past full, taking the entire kit back to SVO land for our upcoming SVO-DVOA joint event. Pick-up crew of Lena and Steph (apologies you two for my master map snafu), Paul O, Patrick, Petr, and Eric W (who spent the entire day out in the woods checking the controlled burn transformation and map that he spent countless hours refining for our 2006 Batona 500 A Event). Anyone else I forgot, my sincere apology.

And thank all of you who braved what was way more severe weather where you live than it was overnight and all today in South Jersey. I suggest weather underground who nailed our weather for the past 3 days

We'll defintely schedule Batsto again for next March, hopefully before this summer's growing season fills in too much of the open woods.  Would love lots of members to experience what we found today in the wonders of the Batsto Pinelands.  If it would stay like this, it would be my favorite map. Cool

Thanks so much to everyone involved. Bob, we really appreciated all the details you communicated leading up to today, as well as the courses themselves (now, I didn't do that great, but that's not your fault.) I enjoyed this somewhat unfamiliar terrain and look forward to more events here!

And new RG Master, Lena, promises that RG for Batsto will soon be up and running.
Would love to see the routes you used today. So please vote early and often.....

    anniemac.

Thank you for coming out today and for your kind remarks.  And i take responsbility for your result if that would help. Cool

Batsto is certainly more subtle terrain than most of our maps, but once you get used to it (and courses use the terrain well), Batsto terrain is actually very dramatic.  And beautiful to boot.  Good to see you today.

Is there any way to schedule this area once or twice before next year to take advantage of the incredible forest conditions and up-to-date mapping?
These are once-in-a-generation (or lifetime?) circumstances, and as Bob said, they won't last.

Thanks for your suggestion, Eric.  At the very least we will be back there next March.
Late Autumn 2019 would likely be not much different.

But yes, I would love more DVOA members to get the chance to run this map in the same conditions as today.
Alas!...Chiggers come alive within a month or so and shouldn't be challenged until at least the first good frost in the Fall.  After that, March 2020 will be virtually the same conditions as Nov/Dec 2019.

If we could be back there next week, that would be cool!!!  Cool
