Veterans Day 2018 was a day of many parades, ceremonies, reflection, and one epic Orienteering Event.  Those that made it out to Fair Hill yesterday experienced outstanding courses, perfect weather, and great fellowship.....a perfect day inthe woods.  As with any event, it takes a team of dedicated volunteers to set up the event and make it run smoothly for the participants.

Leading off the list of thank yous is Tom Overbaugh, our course setter.  Tom created a wonderful collection of challenging and enjoyable courses.  He was the point man with the Park Rangers and, on event day, filled in at a number of positions to make the flow of participants run smoothly.  Also on the front end, thank you to Kathy Urban for securing permissions, Fred Kruesi for printing the maps, and Sandy Fillerbrown for hanging controls before the event.

On Sunday, we had a small team who worked together to deliver an efficiently run event that was enjoyed by 192 participants.  Dave Morgan arrived early and assisted with set-up as well as leading registration before running a course with his daughter.  Mary Frank was our lone E-Punch operator who handled a few surges with ease.  Robert Frank held down Start for the entire shift and then ran as the last participant out with Mary.

Thanks to Vadim and Olga who reprised their Russian Tea stand from Tyler and supplimented the hot drinks and soup to take the chill off the day.

As the shadows grew long, Sandy Fillebrown, Sam Kolins, Lena Kushleyeva, Ron Wood, Kim McCane, and Fred Reed helped Tom make quick work of control pick-up while Mary, Robert, and Dave helped clean up registration.

In addition to the club members who helped out, we also had some Scouts who pitched in to help at download and clean up trash around the pavilion.

Overall, it was a great day in the woods.  Thanks again to the participants who attended and ran and to the volunteers give their time freely to make an enjoyable day for all.

Looking forward to the next event!

Thank you so much John for event directing - much work to make an excellent DVOA event, with some nice bonuses on the side

And to Tom - your course setting was my favorite this year.  Trying to pick among so many difficult route choices, then to hold a tight bearing, then to take the right turn quick, all while moving at Fair Hill speed was exquisite - thank you!
