Topic created by chand on Mon Sep 24, 2018 at 6:28 pmRe-posting some answers to questions I have been getting:
Starts from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM (noon). I'll try to be ready earlier than that but no guarantees.
$5 / map plus boat rentals (if you need it). Maps are two-sided laminated 1:7500 open street map based with USGS contours (which you don't need) and some hand edits.
Individual or team up in whatever boat configurations you'd like
Bring your own boat or call "Port Providence Paddle" to reserve
Call 610-933-1421 ahead of time to reserve your boat(s). Mention you're doing the orienteering event when reserving for a 10% discount off your rental.
All controls are optional. Some controls will be on land and will require you to exit your boat.
Controls are currently: 2 in the canal, 3 during portages, 10 in river. I will do everything I can to make as many water controls reachable by boat, but I also have to keep the equipment safe.
Extra notes:
It's been a wet summer. I am hoping the river level keeps falling these next two weeks. If the river is above certain levels, Port Providence Paddle will not rent. There's one level for families with kids and another level for experienced paddlers. I'll post and update closer to the event - hopefully this won't be an issue.
(People with their own boats won't have this restriction.)
If we get a huge rain right the day before the event and the river looks disgusting and unsafe, then the event will be cancelled.
Islands and shorelines grow and shrink depending on the water levels. The map is "good enough" in my opinion but of course not as good as one of our club's professionally made maps. There will be route choice.
Start and finish controls are on the canal itself
